So little bit on what we are doing in the design workshop. As I mentioned before there are 4 people per team. The assignment itself feels like a 1-year studio but I guess when you actually start doing it turns out a little more complex than expected.
The study of 2d patterns establishes logic of rule-based generative systems. Looking at various cellular patterns, I draw a cellular pattern that we attempt to create a looped chain. Weaving in a planar dimension allows the pattern to respond in high compression forces. Through physical modeling of weaving and interlocking cellular strips and alternating directions, the model establishes a flexible tensile structure that creates an appealing three-dimensional form but it lacks its original strength and stability. Working with paper as an initial substance, we realize that we cut out too much of a material and it causes the pattern and connection to fail.
But we are decided to investigate a chain configuration itself. In a search of a high structural integrity, one of the teammates start looking into folding and I found an origami configuration that allowed to create a complex chain formation. The triangulated form is tested through folding technique where a large triangle is segmented into 45-degree triangular subdivisions. The triangular shape proves to have the highest structural potency and aesthetic function.
The process of folding allows to evolve from a simplistic triangular code generating complex formal configurations. The series of movements of triangulated folding enables the pattern to seriate and to alter, to act and to interact, to twist and to spiral. So each of us explores a triagulated folding in various ways either by changing angles or scale. The triangulated folding system creates spaces and voids by altering triangular units that act as local forces influencing global condition of an overall form.
The folding connection is a critical element that establishes continuous or segmented modules. One of my teammates investigated about 6 connections between folds. The folding connection inherits its original triangular character. So now we are at the stage where we need to pick three connections between these triangulated folding strips and create a bigger field and start manipulating a whole form on the global level.
